Reversal

A reversal is a reading convention in which a card appearing upside down may be interpreted differently from the same card appearing upright.

Reversal

A reversal is a reading convention in which a card appearing upside down may be interpreted differently from the same card appearing upright.

Reversal systems vary.

A reversed card may be interpreted as:

blocked;

internalized;

distorted;

delayed;

opposed;

or as another defined alternate meaning.

Not every tarot reader uses reversals, and oracle decks are likewise inconsistent about them.

Reversal is therefore a reading method, not a requirement for tarot or oracle cards.

AngelCards.info does not use reversals.

Every original card already contains:

a constructive expression;

and a caution/shadow expression.

Nuance comes through context and position rather than physical orientation.

An agreed method, not a universal rule

A reversed card is interpreted through a method chosen by the reader or deck. Decide whether reversals are part of the practice before drawing; they are not required for every card system.

A practical example

AngelCards.info does not use reversed cards. Each original meaning already includes a caution, so a difficult theme can be examined without turning the card upside down or inventing an opposite meaning.
